EDUCATIONAL IMPLICATIONS
How Should Educators Approach this Technological Shift?
Chapter 4a
From an educational standpoint, online privacy and internet safety have become major concerns within the classroom. Students tend to come with different levels of knowledge and understanding, requiring teachers to foster awareness of these issues. Ideally, students should be taught at the primary grade level to allow for further support and scaffolding throughout the years. It would also help them develop agency when navigating the internet by themselves. The following are some of the major issues that teachers should be aware of, and possible solutions to these concerns.
Concerns
-
Directed Advertising (through social media channels, Google, and YouTube)
-
Cyberbullying and stalking (especially exploitation of minors by strangers and paedophiles)
-
Child Pornography
-
Access to Inappropriate Websites (violent and or pornographic images and videos)
Solutions
-
Parental Education
-
Early prevention (by teaching children from an early age)
-
Education on specific topics (Digital Footprint Management, Data Privacy, Online Identity & Digital Citizenship)
