GLOSSARY

  • Contextual Ads: targeted advertising selected and served by automated systems based on the user’s identity and activity online.
     

  • Digital Citizenship: the norms and rules that digital users follow to ensure responsible and safe use of technology.
     

  • Digital Footprint: a trail of data created when a person uses the internet, generated by their online activity and communications.
     

  • Hypermedia: an extension of hypertext that includes links embedded within multimedia, such as audio files, images, and videos (e.g. clicking on a link directing you to a YouTube video, or clicking an image directing you to the image details).
     

  • Hypertext: a word, phrase, or body of text with an embedded link to another website page.
     

  • Listicle: a short form of writing that is presented in the form of a list.
     

  • Multidirectional or Networked Text: another name for hypertext (see definition for hypertext), where text via hyperlinks have the ability to direct a user to other text, pages, and media. 
     

  • Printed Text: text produced via a printing press (e.g. books, newspapers, magazines, etc.).
     

  • Social Networking Sites (SNS): an online platform that allows users to create a public profile and interact with other users on the website.
     

  • Text Technology: a technology platform that supports various forms of text, digital or non-digital, characterized by tools that influence and modify the reading and writing practices of a specific time and culture (e.g. typewriter and paper versus keyboard and computer screen).
